The West African nation of Ghana is mourning after the death of the country’s President John Atta Mills from sudden heart attack. The Ghanaian leader died shortly after he informed th e country’s parliament that he leaving for Nigeria.
An official Press Release issued by the office of the President under the signature of the Chief of Staff, John Henry Martey Newm which said, “it is with a heavy heart and deep sorrow that we announce the sudden untimely death of the President of the Republic of Ghana – His Excellency, John Evans Atta Mills.”
The government’s official statement further said “the death occurred at the 37 Military Hospital this afternoon while receiving medical attention after being taken ill a few hours ago.” Vice President Mahama is expected to broadcast to the nation on the development in due course”, the Ghanaian government’s official statement concluded.
The late President Mills would had taken part in the country’s election which will take place lat this year and would had ben his quest for a second term.
Ghana has come to be styled as a model of democracy in Africa after several successive elections since the country’ former military leader, Jerry Rawlings stepped down after his second term as a democratically elected who came to power on two coupé plots left power after his second civilian term as President of Ghana ended and John Okoufor took over as next President who also completed a term from whom the President Mills inherited Presidency from.
President Mills is the third African leader to die in recent times, first was the late Nigerian leader early this year was Malawi and now Ghana. According to GhanaWeb, a Ghanaian news outlet, President Mills celebrated his 68th birthday last Saturday in a low- key event some orphans in the country’s capital Accra.
