CDC/Liberty Party Merger Runs into Limbo: Disagreements Endanger Prospect

The Congress for Democratic Change, CDC, Liberia largest opposition political party of football icon George Weah held a highly classified strategic working teleconference last night which lasted late into the early morning hours up to 2:00 am this morning.

Sources inside the party attending the teleconference, all of whom asked for anonymity, informed this entity that the highly classified teleconference working session  was focused on the setting up of a taskforce (committee) , to explore the possibility of a merger between the CDC and Liberty Party of Cllr. Charles Brumskine, which would be named “Coalition for Democratic Change”, (CDC)   to unseat President  Johnson-Sirleaf and her Unity Party in the upcoming 2011 elections. After prolong and  intensed deliberaions, our sources disclosed    Mr. Wloti Hne was appointed to chair the taskforce along with his Co-Chairman, Rufus Acquoi, Mrs. Piso Saydee-Tarr, Secretary General of CDC-USA as ex-officio, Mr. Chropie Charlie , and Mr. Nyemah Wisner members respectively.

Information from  our sources in the CDC say, in no minute after members  of  the   taskforce were  appointed, it came  crumbling when the  issue of  defining the term of reference for the taskforce  was put for deliberations before it could take hold the newly  appointed   Chairman Mr. Wloti Hne,  withdrew from the Chairmanship on grounds he is  uncomfortable and doesn’t like what is obtain around the  proposed merger. Mr. Chorpie Charlie, a devoted loyalist of the CDC also withdrew from the taskforce on the precept,  the term of reference of the taskforce was not clear.

At the core of the ranglings concerning the term of reference of the  taskforce, our sources say was the failure of the party to openly and honestly deal with the five hundred-pound guerrila in the room,  and that is whether the taskforce will explore the possibility of whether the party first partisan will go as second to Cllr. Brumskine on a single ticket of the proposed “Coalition for Democratic Change”, (CDC) the umbrella merger of the two parties.

Information filtering  from the  teleconference to this outlet   revealed there are  deep divides and philosophical differences attributing to the   likely   endangerment  of the  merger with various  factions in the party     holding up to their respective approaches at least for now failing to reach an amicable and reasonable  united front to move the merger forward.

The two competing philosophical differecences dividing a united   purpose is,one side of the divide  arguing for that  first partisan to       should   go as Vice President to Cllr. Charles Brumskine because to our sources, they believe if Amb. Weah concedes to going as Vice President, the CDC will inevitably win the 2011 elections, adding the Liberty Party leader will supplement his weakness and Weah too will supplement the weakness of  the Liberty party leader as well  while  at the same time preparing himself well for the Presidency in the 12 years of his Vice Presidency. On the other hand, loyalists and inner circle of George Weah insist and vowed the CDC first partisan will and can not go as Vice President to Cllr. Brumskine in the proposed merger umbrella, “Coalition for Democratic Change”, (CDC) or any other person, adding the CDC leader and the party could be marginalized by Brumskine and  Liberty Party will  flood the government and coalition with his corporate buddies and the old boys network, pushing out the lay man, the owners of the grass root CDC, our sources disclosed.

It said the CDC first partisan is leaning on the side of his loyalists though he promised  in earlier public statements that all options were  on the table  as they forge  the merger. Our sources  further disclosed that the CDC first partisan maintains he brings 35% of the electorates to the table and if other opposition parties forging the merger show how much worth of political assert they bring to the table with meaningful substance, he doesn’t  see the logic of going as Vice President.

It can be recalled the CDC first partisan and Cllr. Charles Brumskine signed a memorandum of Understand(MOU)  recently promising to collaborate in a united front to produce a single ticket to unseat President and her Unity Party led government.

The deep philosophical differences prevailing in the CDC, according to our  sources inside  the party    could harm and endanger the  merger and frustrate the dream of the proposed,”Coalition  for Democratic Change”, (CDC).

The teleconferences concluded, as disclosed by our sources, to prevail on Mr. Hne to rescind his decision to withdraw from the chairmanship and resume the  chairmanship to move the merger forward but for now the taskforce is in limbo and the prospect of moving forward uncertain.

  1. Political parties coming together in order to be strong need not be condemn by anyone who loves Liberia. We all need to embrace this merger. Liberia does not need mushrooms parties who can not win elections or form strong opposition.
However, party executives have to be inform about decisions concerning merging with other political parties. Political parties do not belong to individuals. The parties are for the people, and it is the people who can make better decissions concerning political parties.
I am not a member of CDC , Liberty Party and LINU, but would like for many of these parties come togethr for the betterment of our beloved country.

  2. We are hearing that Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is eying T.Q. Harris to run on her ticket. What do we do to break the political circles of Ellen and TQ Harris? If such information is not true, maybe we should plant a political seed in their mist. What do you think??? Or Could we enguage TQ Harris since he continue to speak against Ellen Johnson over and over? Does he matter at this time???

This is what some of us had been waiting for as supporters of CDC, onec again may I say we welcome the merger. And I appeal to all partisms of CDC to support the merger, this is the only way we can win the Unity party come 2011.

  4. I doubt this merger will hold, cux, each one of the guys involved wants to be president.

Under no circumstance that a learned and experienced lawyer, Cllr. Brumskine will want to go as vice presidential candidate to a footballer who did not graduate from high school yet he is claiming to be a collage graduate from an unknown university in America. on the other hand, George Weah will find it difficult to accept the vice standard bearer post due to pressure from his CDC members, especially the few educated ones. They want to rely on the popularity of Mr. weah to get to key positions in government if they should win the 2011 elections.

How could one be president of a suffering country like Liberia and can not pronounce the word “PRIVATIZATION

    God help Nana Liberia.

  6. Softly, softly catches a monkey. Whatever Brumskine can do to have Weah and supporters hand him the presidency on a silver platter, should be done. As president, he has the constitutional power to replace his vice president at any time! In fact, that will be a real democratic change!

    • well from my own understanding the concepts of grassroot party is now turning into the hands of the old guys own things and so the need to carefully investigate the merger is now the paramount concern.
