Liberia: Opposition Party Youth Chairman on the Run, Rescued from Attempted Arrest by Bystanders


The Chairman of the Youth wing of Liberia’s leading opposition party, the Congress for Democratic Change, Jefferson Koiji has reportedly gone into hiding after he was rescued bystanders at the scene of his attempted arrest.

According to  an eye-witness account, security men showed up at Mr Koiji’s  home in Monrovia today and attempted his arrest but bystanders at the scene prevented his arrest and has since gone into hiding.

Eye-witness account from the Liberian capital, reveals that when the Liberian government was contacted to verify if Mr Koiji was ordered to be arrested or wanted, the government dismissed and refuted ever ordering the arrest of Mr Koiji and neither did the government sent security to arrest the opposition Youth wing Chairman.

Mr Koiji l held  a press  conference lat week and revealed that a plot was in the making  to overthrow President Sirleaf upon her return to the country using the cover of the pending protest. The opposition Youth wing Chairman also accused prominent public officials and politicians of master-minding the plot.

The leader of the party of which Mr Koiji chairs the Youth wing, Ambassador George Weah who is also Liberia’s Peace Ambassador, has condemned his action and termed it as reckless and tantamount to derailing the peace the country has earned. Our correspondent in Monrovia reports that the opposition leader and Peace Ambassador has recommended the dismissal of Mr Koiji from his post.
