The Liberia-America Friendship Organization, LIAFO, an institution fostering US-Liberia relations and historical friendly ties in the United States, named Dr Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol as co-recipients of its 2015 “Friendship Award”.
In separate communications to the two recipients, the Liberia-America Friendship Organization lauded the two United States health practitioners and missionaries for their selfless sacrifices to the people of Liberia even at the peril of their lives fighting the deadly Ebola outbreak in Liberia and coming face-to-face with the viciousness of the virus as they contracted it but survived. “Your sacrifice to the people of Liberia is reflective of of the true meaning of the promoting of US-Liberia relations and historical friendly ties and we are therefore honored to name both health practitioners and missionaries as its “2015 Friendship Award” recipients, the press release said.
Dr Brantly and Ms Writebol are the second recipients of the organization’s prestigious Award, with Rhode Island Senator Jack Reed been the first recipient.
The press release discloses that a $5 million “Friendship Trust Fund” will also be launched tailored to helping Ebola survivors and victim’s children as well as the organization’s education, health and agriculture programs in Liberia.
According the Organization’s President, Ms Writebol confirmed coming to receive her Award and wrote the following ” Dear Mr. Peah, thank you so much for your letter of invitation and the honor of the “Friendship Award”. Ms Writebol’s communication further said, “we are back in Liberia now and yesterday (June 24, 2015) was my first day back at the hospital to help with the survivors clinic”. “To hear the stories, my heart was broken for the people of Liberia. I have taken a Trauma Healing course and we will be offering it in July to those who desire to be trained to help in churches and the community”, she told the President of the Liberia-America Friendship Organization.
Ms Writebol told the organization’s President in her final communication, “thank you again for the Award. We came to Liberia to serve the Lord in any way we can, never imagining that Ebola would be a part of our lives but God is using it and we give Him the glory for the great things He has done”.
According to the Press Release issued by the Liberia-America Friendship Organization, Dr Brantly and Ms Writebol will be presented their Awards on August 15, 2015 during the Organization’s Gala Banquet and Award Night in Upper Darby, outside Philadelphia,in the state of Pennsylvania.
The institutions both health practitioners and missionaries work for, Samaritan’s Purse and SIM USA will as be given “Special Recognition as well during the Award ceremonies.
The former Chairman of the Liberia Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), Cllr. Jerome Verdier, will serve as Keynote Speaker of the Banquet and Award Night.
