Newton County Sheriff office in the state of Georgia, United States on Tuesday, April 19, 2016 issued Arrest Warrant for Liberia’s Senator George Weah and leader of that country biggest opposition party, Congress for Democratic Change.
According to the Arrest Warrant, the opposition leader who announced his bid for the country’s Presidency in 2017 on Thursday, April 28, 2016 before a sea of partisans which the party styled, “Two Million Man March and Blue Day” is charged with felony child abandonment.
Senator Weah who is a football icon turned politician and winner FIFA World Best Player of the Year, European Best, and African Best Player of the year all in one year (1995) but turned politician could face prison time if convicted and is docketed by the Newton County Sheriff with warrant number “D1604001” and offense type, felony.
According media source, the Liberian lawmaker trial is scheduled for May 11, 2017 in the United but it is not clear whether the Senator will voluntarily surrender to the Newton Sheriff office or the United States will ask the Liberian for his extradition for trial.
It was reported recently by this outlet few months ago that indeed an Arrest Warrant was awaiting the Liberian opposition leader in the united States for failure to pay child support but his followers vehemently denied there was any such thing and described the report as misleading meant to tarnish the Senator’s good image.
The Senator and opposition leader and party did not however refute the story.
