Liberia-America Friendship Organization
The Liberia-America Friendship Organization, (LIAFO) an observer group observing the electoral process and to observe the October 10th Elections of Liberia welcomes the resignation of Hon Eugene Nagbe, Minister of Information from his post to focus on his position as Secretary General of the Unity Party in adherence to the National Code of Conduct, Article 5.1 (a) (b)(c) which state that “All Officials appointed by the President of the Republic of Liberia shall not:
- a) engage in political activities, canvass or contest for elected offices;
- b) use Government facilities, equipment or resources in support of partisan or political activities;
- c) serve on a campaign team of any political party, or the campaign of any independent candidate”.
LIAFO is impressed that Hon Nagbe has chosen the rule of law over personal aggrandisement which could had levied an undue advantages over the opposition and create conflict of interest in the conduct of his duties as Minister of Information and a clear line of neutrality of his job as Minister and that of Secretary General of the ruling Unity Party on one hand and the unfair use of his office and resources at the disposal of the Information Ministry at the disadvantage of the opposition in contravention of the Code of Conduct, election laws and the Constitution could not be mapped.
LIAFO expresses enthusiasm that the Honorable Minister could muster the courage to conform to the rule of law introspect of the personal outreach by the organization’s President to the Minister few months ago, insisting that he resigns either one of his positions to adhere to Article 5.1(a)(b)(c) of the Code of Conduct and that he has come through to reverence the rule of law.
Minister Nagbe’s resignation should be applauded by all Liberians and take pride in their country and relish the experience that a quiet new dispensation is dawn, something the skeptics who lost faith in their country could barely perceive or saw coming that the “rule of law” and fortitude of Liberian institutions and citizens can stand tight together to dispense the “rule of law” without favor, something the Liberia of our grand parents could not had anticipated.
LIAFO calls on all public officials to either resign their government or party leadership position and avoid conflict of interest.
LIAFO further admonish the Vice President and the Unity Party to observe the Code of Conduct and resist the appetite to deploy government resources in any kind during this campaign season. Public officials and employees are also advised not to use government resources of any kind to campaign or deploy to the campaign of any party or candidate for do so is breach of the Code of Conduct.
Something new is happening in Liberia and every Liberian must seize the opportunity to craft the country they long envisioned that could compete on the world stage and obliterate the 170 years the locusts have eaten.
Let democracy reign, let the rule of law reign irrespective of favor, power and wealth- for a new nation is dawn knowing that “Liberia is the only country we have” and “Liberia is worth fighting for.”
